Friday Fictioneers – The following photo is the prompt. Does it speak to you? What does it say? (In 100 words or less.)
“I’ve got it! I found the key!” John exclaimed, waving it in the air.
“C’mon, open it, open the chest!” Ginny teetered with excitement on the threshold of discovering the treasures hidden in Grandma’s cedar chest.
Click. Squeak. Creak. The lid opened, dust particles danced wildly in the streaming sunlight for the first time in half a century.
Yanking away the lace shawl, which sheltered the dreams within, they heard the plop of something small.
An old lollipop, shared between two lovers, a promise of lips to meet again sweetly, after the war. A promise he kept four years later.
***NOTE: The photo looks like an old, dirty lollipop to me, thus, my story.
I like it 🙂

Thanks Marilyn, I didn’t like the photo, wasn’t sure where I would take it, it’s only half-hearted writing, I lacked inspiration. Now, to find yours… 😉

I don’t do this particular prompt, not because I have anything against it but because … I don’t. No reason. I think I’m already doing so many prompts, I decided I couldn’t commit to any more.

This looks like an old dirty lollipop to me as well. Quite possibly a trick one of my brothers would play on me – close your eyes and open your mouth… ugh

Sounds like you had brothers like mine! 😉

I would never have imagined an old, dirty lollipop would be romantic. I stand corrected. Kudos for cleverness.

Thank you! Originally, I thought I’d steer it to a more eerie story, but, I ran out of words! 😀

Actually, the photograph was not mine, it was a “prompt” from Friday Fictioneers, http://rochellewisofffields.wordpress.com/2014/10/01/3-october-2014/ .

If I may say it this way, what a sweet story and it’s also funny in a delicate and genteel way. Excellent phrasings, for instance: “Ginny teetered with excitement on the threshold of discovering…” I can see her as if she’s on a seesaw or “teeter-totter,” so an awesome showing “que” to character age there, Swoosieque! 🙂 Plus, great use of the photograph.

Thank you so much Leigh! I was happy with how that sentence transpired. It can be so difficult when words are limited, quite a challenge! 😀

It is, and I fail Rochelle’s challenges with some regularity! 🙂 (though I still love them) Speaking of, I was reading about this free writing workshop and thought of you. Not that you need it, but actually you teaching or co-teaching it! http://writingwomenslives.com/writing-our-grandmothers/ You might also want to check out WOW! (Women on Writing) if you haven’t yet. They have flash fiction competitions regularly (plus, money prizes, yay; I can’t remember if there’s an entry fee or not)!
