A Sweet Promise

FridayFictioneersFriday Fictioneers – The following photo is the prompt. Does it speak to you? What does it say? (In 100 words or less.)

“I’ve got it! I found the key!” John exclaimed, waving it in the air.

“C’mon, open it, open the chest!” Ginny teetered with excitement on the threshold of discovering the treasures hidden in Grandma’s cedar chest.

Click. Squeak. Creak. The lid opened, dust particles danced wildly in the streaming sunlight for the first time in half a century.

Yanking away the lace shawl, which sheltered the dreams within, they heard the plop of something small.

An old lollipop, shared between two lovers, a promise of lips to meet again sweetly, after the war. A promise he kept four years later.

  1. This looks like an old dirty lollipop to me as well. Quite possibly a trick one of my brothers would play on me – close your eyes and open your mouth… ugh

  8. I would never have imagined an old, dirty lollipop would be romantic. I stand corrected. Kudos for cleverness.

  14. If I may say it this way, what a sweet story and it’s also funny in a delicate and genteel way. Excellent phrasings, for instance: “Ginny teetered with excitement on the threshold of discovering…” I can see her as if she’s on a seesaw or “teeter-totter,” so an awesome showing “que” to character age there, Swoosieque! 🙂 Plus, great use of the photograph.
