Always Something There to Remind Me – The First Lady in Red

DAILY PROMPT: A song comes on the radio and instantly, you’re transported to a different time and place. Which song(s) bring back memories for you and why? Be sure to mention the song, and describe the memory it evokes.

Red_Cocktail_DressBefore the movie, before the song, (Chris DeBurgh’s – Lady in Red – 1986)  there was the dress – my dress – my graceful, form flattering, shocking-red dress. This knee-length, wrap-around with plunging neckline was the perfect dress for disco dancing and had graced many a nightclub floors as I boogie-woogied under disco balls and dance floors through the late 70’s and early 80’s. There was one occasion, while wearing this dress, which I shall forever remember.

While attending my brother’s wedding, I left the banquet room to use the rest room. Upon my return, I mistakenly entered a different banquet room where another celebration was being held. As soon as I swung the double-doors open, I realized something was wrong. No one was dancing. The band was playing to a bunch of deadbeats until they saw me and stopped playing immediately. I was transfixed by their stares for a long moment until I gathered my senses and turned to leave. Suddenly, a band member called out for me to stay. then another and another until the entire eight-piece band were cajoling me. I smiled, waved, turned and headed down the hallway to the correct banquet room.

After telling my husband of this adventure, he smiled widely, kissed me gently and whispered warmly into my ear, “My Lady in Red.”

My husband died unexpectedly the following year. There were no more dances, no more chances to make new memories or claim new songs as ‘our song’, that is, until Chris DeBurgh’s song, “Lady in Red”, climbed to the top of the charts.  That song will always take me back to a deep feeling of being loved and remembering one of the last kisses we shared – it was truly, “our song.”

  10. A beautiful sad story, and memorable song, too. The song has always seemed melancholic to me, or perhaps just longing. As such, it works really well for the loving sentiment here (I’m just sorry you had to go through such a tremendous loss).
